The decisive role of non-decision time in decision-making models

报告简介
Computational models of decision making account for decision performance by postulating latent cognitive stages, typically distinguishing the durations of decision and non-decision processes. Decision times result from the progressive accumulation of the evidence needed to make a choice. Non-decision times result from the need to encode the stimulus early on, and from the need to generate a response after a decision is reached. The properties of this non-decision time have seldom been investigated, and its associated parameter is pointedly referred to as “residual time”. In this talk I will present you several studies showing how the abstract behaviorally extracted non-decision time relates to actual neural measures and experimental manipulations. Doing so I hope to convince you about merits and shortcomings of the application of evidence accumulation models such as the Drift Diffusion Model and how each application of these modelling method should be carefully tested prior to draw conclusions on the latent psychological processes they are supposed to represent.
